I made the decision on March 17th to temporarily suspend face to face contact with my clients in light of the governments announcement regarding the Coronavirus. Social distancing is vital to flattening the curve of the pandemic so as to lighten the load on the NHS and protect the more vulnerable in our society. I won’t see clients face to face again until it feels safe, for everybody, to do so.
We’re all in the same position which is one of being isolated in a way we’ve never been before. We’re also isolated at a time of exceptional levels of uncertainty and stress. This is particularly difficult given our nervous systems are regulated by (the right kind) of contact with others. High anxiety and intense isolation is not a recipe for emotional well being, and if ever there was a time when we need our emotional wellbeing, it’s this one.
Normally I prefer working face to face therapeutically, but these are exceptional times. I don’t want to stop working (both because I want to and because I need to) and many people will need and want counselling and therapy. For the time being, I’ll be moving to Skype. This can offer several advantages. Firstly I’ll be charging less than I do for face to face sessions - £50 per 1 hour session rather than the usual £60.
Skype also offers other advantages:
* You're in the privacy and comfort of your own home
* You don't need to worry about travel and the current health risks of doing so
* Geographical distance is not a barrier to our working together
* There is greater flexibility with appointment times and scheduling
In addition you can receive emotional help and support while continuing to keep yourself and those close to you safe. This in turn is contributing something very significant to the safety of others in a society in the grip of a pandemic.
