What is complementary medicine?
Complementary medicine describes a wide range of approaches that work alongside conventional medical treatments. These approaches include practices like acupuncture, massage, mindfulness-based therapies, and nutritional support.
While these methods do not replace standard medical care, they can help people manage symptoms, improve well-being, and support overall health.
The evolving evidence base
In recent years, there has been growing research interest in how complementary therapies can help with pain management, mental health, and chronic health conditions.
For example:
- Acupuncture has been studied extensively for its role in reducing chronic pain, tension headaches, and osteoarthritis symptoms.
- Mindfulness and body-focused approaches have shown promise in reducing anxiety, stress, and symptoms of depression.
- Touch therapies (like massage) can support relaxation and help reduce the physiological effects of stress.
While the evidence is still evolving and varies in quality, there is increasing recognition that these approaches can play a valuable supportive role in a broader treatment plan.
My integrative approach
I offer an integrative practice in Berkhamsted, combining counselling, cognitive hypnotherapy, and acupuncture. I focus on understanding each person as a whole — mind, body, and emotional landscape rather than reducing issues to isolated symptoms.
Many clients come to me when they feel stuck in patterns of physical pain and emotional distress. By combining traditional talking therapy with somatic and complementary methods, we can often access deeper layers of healing and self-understanding.
A note on safety and evidence
It’s important to approach any complementary therapy thoughtfully. Not all methods are suitable for everyone, and they should always be discussed in the context of your overall healthcare plan.
I encourage clients to be informed and to choose approaches that feel supportive and aligned with their needs.
