I see a wide range of people with all sorts of different problems but the one thing they all have in common is they’re suffering and need of some help, which is something that happens to all of us. While we all could do with help when we’re suffering, the proportion of people that actually seek help is probably quite small and there are likely a number of complex factors that contribute to this. It’s sad that there is not much of a culture of openness in the UK around the difficulties inherent in being human since they’re inevitably parts of everybody’s experience. Difficult feelings, stress, the pressure of working life, being part of a family, being in a relationship or not being in one, dealing with the fragilities of health and bodies that can fail us are all unavoidable parts of life at one time or another. It makes me think of the quote by the American Buddhist Pema Chodron “If you’re invested in security and certainty, you are on the wrong planet”. That quote captures for me something about the fragile nature of life, our inner experience, and how easily it can all be thrown off kilter. Strangely as common as these experiences are we don’t often talk about it. Even though being able to talk about ones experience may actually be a very valuable skill to have, just as being able to listen to it might.
In the news today for example the BBC reported that 300,000 people lose their jobs each year in the UK due to problems with their emotional and mental health. Earlier in the week The Guardian reported on the negative impact of social media on young peoples emotional health, and the same newspaper also reported that self harm amongst teenage girls aged 13-16 has risen 68% in three years. So mental health issues are a pervasive part of our lives that connect and affect everyone.
If you want a sense of these kinds of issue on a global scale, the World Health Organisation lists depression as ‘the leading cause of disability worldwide, and a major contributor to the overall global burden of disease’ which is an incredible problem when you think about it. We as a species are more disabled by our minds than our bodies.
